The elaboration of predictive sedimentological models is one of the main tools used in petroleum exploration. The objective of this work is to present a brief sedimentological, stratigraphical, palynofaciological and geochemical characterization of one of the main organic-rich interval and potential source-rock of the Lusitanian Basin: the Marl-limestone with organic-rich facies member of the Vale das Fontes Formation (Pliensbachian, Lower Jurassic). The ongoing studies, especially those concerning organic matter aim at increasing the knowledge about the lateral and temporal variation of the depositional environments and the palaeoenvironmental conditions contemporaneous with the sedimentation, not only in the Lusitanian Basin, but also at a regional and, through comparison and correlation, global scale.
